Native in northern NY state and naturalized in the northeast, tufted hairgrass is a summer-blooming ornamental grass suited to moist soils. The plants form a compact mound of narrow, dark green foliage followed by tall airy flower stalks. This species grows well as a clump-forming grass in shade, but requires a sunnier location for dense flowering. This is a cool-season grass that emerges early in spring and can hold green leaves late into fall and winter. Plants grow approximately 1 foot wide and high, with flower stalks reaching 2-3 feet tall.
