Mertensia virginica

from $7.50

Mertensia virginica | Virginia bluebells

One of the showiest of our eastern spring ephemerals, Virginia bluebells produce beautiful clusters of flowers that emerge pink before turning their namesake blue. Bluebells naturally inhabit moist, rich woods, and will prefer a location under deciduous trees where they will benefit from early spring sunlight and leaf-litter enriched soils. They can spread by seed and form large clumps over time. A true spring ephemeral, plants will go completely dormant in summer after flowering and setting seed.

Virginia bluebells has a native range that begins in Western NY and extends south and west across most of the Eastern U.S. Because it is not locally native, we recommend this species for woodland and shade gardens, but not for woodland restoration projects.

SOLD in fall as bare root only. Pickup Nov 22-23; plant immediately after pickup.
