Myrica pensylvanica

$26.00

Myrica pensylvanica | Northern bayberry

Northern bayberry has fragrant, dense foliage that makes it useful as a deciduous hedge. Growing 4-9’ tall, this shrub tolerates both moist and dry sites, and can grow in nutrient poor soils and locations with salt spray. This is a dioecious species (plants are male or female)—both sexes are needed for pollination and fruit set. Females develop gray-blue berries that attract birds in winter. Best in full sun to part shade. Also known as candleberry—the fruits have a scented waxy coating that was historically used to make candles and soap. Not a true evergreen, but plants tend to hold leaves late, sometimes through the winter. We recommend this one in hedgerows and where screening is needed. It is one of our favorite deer resistant, easy-to-grow, and trouble-free shrubs. These are seed propagated and sold unsexed.

1 gallon pot.
