Myrica pensylvanica | Northern bayberry

Northern bayberry has fragrant, dense foliage that makes it useful as a deciduous hedge. Growing 4-9’ tall, this shrub tolerates both moist and dry sites, and can grow in nutrient poor soils and locations with salt spray. This is a dioecious species (plants are male or female)—both sexes are needed for pollination and fruit set. Females develop gray-blue berries that attract birds in winter. Best in full sun to part shade. Also known as candleberry—the fruits have a scented waxy coating that was historically used to make candles and soap. These are seed propagated and sold unsexed.
