Sanguinaria canadensis

from $7.50

Sanguniaria canadensis | bloodroot

Bloodroot is a locally abundant spring ephemeral that inhabits forests and wooded roadsides. Named for the intense color of its root sap, bloodroot is more recognizable from its showy white flowers and the distinctive leaves that open fully after the flowers have faded. Although bloodroot has a short bloom time, it is striking when in flower and a common component of our local woodland ecosystem. This species will be happiest in moist, organically-rich soils with plenty of leaf litter. One of the first wildflowers to bloom in spring, they grow in part or full shade provided they have ample sun in early spring before the trees leaf out. Plants will go fully dormant in summer.

SOLD in fall as bare root only. Pickup Nov 22-23; plant immediately after pickup.
