Tithonia 'Torch'
Tithonia rotundifolia ‘Torch’ | Mexican sunflower
Tithonia is a gorgeous wildflower native to Mexico. In the northeast, plants start out slowly at first but mature into a spectacular plant by mid-summer. Bold orange flowers held on strong stems begin in summer and continue until frost. They are covered in bees and butterflies—monarchs, especially, frequent them in late summer and fall for a late season source of nectar. Tithonia will reach 6’ tall in a single growing season and several plants growing together can easily create a focal point or even an annual hedge. Makes a good cutflower.
There is no advantage to sowing Tithonia early. This species loves the heat and grows rapidly when soil temperatures are consistently warm. Grow in full sun.
3” pot or packet of 35 seeds.
*Seeds available for pre-order, plants expected in mid-May.

SOWING
Direct seed Tithonia after all danger of frost has passed and when soils have warmed. Sow 2-3 seeds together approximately 1/4” deep into loose, well prepared soil. After germination thin to the strongest seedling. Plants can be started indoors in pots 3-4 weeks before the last frost.
SPACING
Allow 12-24” between plants. Tithonia has an upright, bushy habit and can grow quite large if given the space.
Annual flower seeds are not grown by Tiny Meadow Farm.
